.ce USING SCREENWRIGHT PROFESSIONAL
.ce by Paul D. Nadler
.ca FADE IN TO:
.di# INT. LIVING ROOM -- NIGHT.
.di SAM and HILDA seated in front of their computer. SAM holds the
_ScreenWright Professional_ diskette in one hand and a peanut butter
sandwich in the other. In the green glow of the CRT monitor, their faces
look distinctly confused, even nauseated.
.ca MEDIUM-LONG SHOT
.nm HILDA
.sp Okay, we got the thing set up and turned on. What do we do now?
.nm SAM
.pa (Shrugging)
.sp I dunno. Have dinner?
.nm HILDA
.sp Big help you are.
.nm SAM
.sp Aren't there any instructions?
.nm HILDA
.sp There was one thing ...
.ca# MEDIUM SHOT
.di HILDA rummages through the papers on the desk, and finally extracts the
"Welcome to _ScreenWright Professional_" letter from the pile.
.nm HILDA
.sp Here we are. It says "Dear Hilda and Sam" -- that's us --
.di SAM rolls his eyes.
.ca CLOSE UP
.nm HILDA
.sp It goes on: "Thank you for choosing _ScreenWright Professional_," et
cetera, et cetera. Oh, here: "Once you have your computer turned on and
running, immediately make a backup copy of your _ScreenWright Professional_
diskette and store the original in a safe place."
.ca# MEDIUM-LONG SHOT
.nm SAM
.pa (Taking a bite of his sandwich)
.sp How come?
.nm HILDA
.sp That way, if you mess something up you'll still have the original, and you
won't have lost anything. So let's make a backup copy.
.ca MEDIUM-CLOSE SHOT
.nm SAM
.pa (Pulling the diskette from its protective sleeve)
.sp That's easy enough.
.ca MEDIUM SHOT
.nm HILDA
.pa (Grabbing the diskette away from him)
.sp Hey, you want to get P.B.J. all over it? Let me make the backup now; then
you can drool on it all you like.
.ca MEDIUM SHOT
.nm SAM
.sp Oh, yeah? And what "safe place" are you going to put it in?
.ca MEDIUM SHOT
.nm HILDA
.pa (Inserting the diskette in the computer)
.sp Someplace where you'll never touch it -- the laundry room.
.ca MEDIUM-LONG SHOT
.nm SAM
.sp Whoa now. That was a low blow, Ms. H.
.nm HILDA
.pa (Opening the computer manual)
.sp Quiet -- I'm looking up how to make a disk backup ...
.ca DISSOLVE TO:
.di# THE SAME SCENE -- A FEW MINUTES LATER.
.nm HILDA
.pa (Reading)
.sp "After you have made the backup of your original _ScreenWright
Professional_ diskette, put the new diskette in your computer's main disk
drive."
.di SAM puts the new diskette in the appropriate disk drive.
.nm SAM
.sp Done.
.nm HILDA
.pa (Still reading)
.sp "Now type _SWPRO_" -- that must stand for _ScreenWright Professional_-
- "and press the Return button."
.di SAM types _SWPRO_ and presses the return button.
.nm SAM
.sp Listen -- the disk drive is whirring!
.nm HILDA
.sp "The _ScreenWright Professional_ sign-on message now appears, followed
by a request for the name of the file to be formatted."
.nm SAM
.sp But what do we type?
.nm HILDA
.sp "A sample file called _swtry.me_ is included on your _ScreenWright
Professional_ diskette."
.nm SAM
.pa (Typing _swtry.me_)
.sp Ask a silly question ...
.nm HILDA
.sp "Then you will be asked where the formatted screenplay is to be sent. The
choices are _C_ for console, _P_ for printer, or _F_ for file. If your printer
is connected, type _P_; otherwise type _C_ for console."
.nm SAM
.pa (Typing)
.sp So I'll type _P_.
.pa (Pause)
.sp Ooh -- it's whirring again!
.di The printer begins to type.
.nm HILDA
.sp It's printing, Sam! It's printing!
.nm SAM
.ju
.sp It's no suprise to me. See how both the left and right margins of my
speech are straight now? Just like yours truly, my speech is fully
justified.
.nj
.nm HILDA
.sp Nerts to you, kiddo. _I_ need no justification.
.ca CLOSE-UP
.nm SAM
.pa (Taking another bite of sandwich)
.sp Me, I'm just mentally composing my acceptance speech for "Best Screenplay."
.ca DISSOLVE TO:
.di# DREAM SEQUENCE -- THE ACADEMY AWARD CEREMONY.
.di The applause is deafening. SAM, in a purple tuxedo, stands behind the
microphone.
.di HILDA sits nearby, crying into her champagne. Her screenplay sits in
her lap; page by page, she picks it up and tears it to shreds.
.di Is Sam happy? He is. Is he dapper? He is. Is he drunk? Bien Sur.
He holds an Oscar, which he brandishes at the audience.
.nm SAM
.pa (Reading from a notecard)
.sp I'm speechless, folks. How can I hope to thank the millions of people
who helped make this award possible? My mother, who learned me to talk
right; my agent, who pressured me to express myself; my analyst, who taught
me the value of remaining silent -- all of you deserve thanks beyond the
power of my poor words to express. And lastly, my dear Hilda, who taught me
to use _ScreenWright Professional_ -- to you I can only give my heartfelt
gratitude and undying love.
.di The cheers of the audience burst forth again. SAM begins to sob with joy.
The shot grows hazier and hazier, and eventually SAM's sobs turn into snores as
we
.ca DISSOLVE TO:
.di# INT. LIVING ROOM -- NIGHT.
.di SAM is now asleep in his chair, snoring. His peanut butter sandwich lies on
his chest. HILDA is hunched over the computer, typing furiously.
.nm SAM
.pa (Awakening with a start)
.sp Huh? Wha -- what happened?
.nm HILDA
.pa (Still typing)
.sp Have a nice snooze?
.nm SAM
.pa (Confused)
.sp I dreamt -- I thought --
.nm HILDA
.pa (Still typing)
.sp The same old dream again?
.nm SAM
.sp Yeah. What have you been doing?
.nm HILDA
.pa (Still typing)
.sp Oh, just typing in my screenplay. There -- all done!
.nm SAM
.sp Say what?
.nm HILDA
.sp My screenplay, silly.
.nm SAM
.sp Your screenplay!
.nm HILDA
.sp It's brilliant. And I'll never have to retype a draft again.
.nm SAM
.sp Shattered -- and it's all _ScreenWright Professional_'s fault!
.nm HILDA
.sp No, don't worry -- I'll thank _you_ when they give _me_ the Oscar.
.nm SAM
.sp But I ... but you ... but I ...
.nm HILDA
.sp Oh, baby, come here. There's plenty of room for both of us at this
keyboard!
.di SAM cuddles up to HILDA before the gaily glowing CRT as we
.ca FADE OUT
.nm _THE END_
